‘Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon ‘em.’
This is actually a quote from a letter written to the smug and highly gullible Malvolio in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, designed to dupe him into believing that Olivia is in love with him.
And that’s the challenge for all who would be ‘Great Leaders’. We are all at risk of becoming victims of our own self-delusional hype. Great leadership isn’t about having a high public profile nor is it about being admired. You do not have to think hard to remember just how badly behaved and uninspiring some recent ‘headline’ leaders have turned out to be (think banks, MP expenses, TV personalities and Media moguls).
In our humble opinion, great leaders have a truly inspiring vision and model strong, positive values day in and day out, which taking account of the well-being of all. They are as likely to be found low down in the social hierarchy, teaching or parenting kids, supervising their colleagues on the shop-floor or helping others who are struggling to help themselves as they are in the upper echelons of corporate business.
If you are genuinely interested in pursuing a positive vision and you care about how you achieve it with reference to the rest of humanity, APT4L leadership development programmes and coaching will probably suit you down to the ground. Testosterone fuelled, power junkies may be disappointed.
